Valuable data stored online on IT systems and networks (including cloud storage) must be backed up regularly to secure off-line storage to reduce the impact of incidents such as ransomware infections, hardware/software/network failures and various errors or accidents.  
 
Note: this policy template elaborates on the purpose of backups in general.  It does not state exactly how and when each individual database, system or device is to be backed up.  Hence, you also need to specify, design, test, implement, manage and maintain appropriate backup approaches in sufficient detail, and probably document them by extending the policy or providing supplementary procedures, standards and guidelines (not included!).
